Transdermal bioadhesives

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”

Arthur C. Clarke

what is it?

A topical drug system that delivers medicines through the skin into the bloodstream that functions as a promising alternative when controlled dosage is envisaged, or when prolonged therapy by oral administration is not recommended

the problem

Nowadays, for many clinical cases related with located trauma anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics are frequently prescribed. The most common way of administrating these drugs is oral. But a prolonged therapy can end up causing side damages, mainly in the gastro-intestinal system that can lead to other future clinical problems.

A viable alternative is to administer these type of drugs via the skin (transdermal) which allows to adjust the exact dose needed, especially in cases where pain and inflammation are located not throughout the whole body but only in very specific areas.

our solution

This project intends to develop and characterize new photo reticulated materials, with adhesive properties, from renewable raw materials and based on sustainable strategies. It intends to obtain environmentally and economically viable final products which may be marketed as controlled drug delivery devices, namely transdermal administered non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
